Chapter 1: The Mirror

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Willow. She lived in a blue house with her Mommy, her Papa, and her big silly puppy, Katara. Every child has many fairies, but they also have one special fairy that watches them and makes sure they grow up full of wonder and happiness; Willow’s special fairy was named Petal Icewand.

Willow’s fairies, would come and visit her while she was asleep, bringing her sweet dreams and happy thoughts. Sometimes they would also leave her presents!

One day, while Willow and Katara played in the library, Willow heard a strange sound, almost like jingling bells, outside. All of a sudden there was a single knock at the door. Willow, who was a smart girl, knew that she shouldn't answer the door, so she called for her mommy.

“Mommy! There’s someone at the door,” she exclaimed, “and I think I heard bells! Maybe it’s the fairies!”
Willow’s Mommy went to the front door and opened it slowly, and as she opened the door she saw a huge wooden box, twice as high as Willow and very thin. Katara was very curious and she slowly slunk around the package, sniffing as she went.

“I wonder what this could be?” asked Mommy.
Willow looked closely and noticed a beautiful tag on the box that read “To: Willow. From: The Fairies”.

“Mommy, it’s for me!”

Mommy noticed the tag and read the rest. It said: this special package is for Willow. She must open it in her room at the top of the stairs, and she MUST be alone!
Mommy knew that fairies take care of their children, but she also knew that fairies are very mischievous and don’t always think about what is safest. Magic can be tricksy, and Fairy Magic is the most tricksy of all.

“Hmmm” said Mommy. “I don’t think you should be alone when you open it, but how about I wait right outside of your door?”

“Okay,” said Willow.

Mommy and Willow carried the big box up the stairs to Willow’s room and leaned it against the wall by her window, as Katara scampered about, obviously excited about what the surprise could be.

“All right” said Mommy, “I’m going to be outside your door and you can open your present, but I will be right here if you need me.”

Mommy stepped outside of Willow’s room and closed the door almost completely, so that it was open just a crack, so she could peek through and still see Willow.

Willow gazed up at the large wooden package looming over her and began to feel a little apprehensive. Katara softly padded up to Willow’s side and looked at the package with her.

As Willow reached out to touch it, the sides of the box magically fell away and disappeared, revealing a large, elaborately gilded mirror. The mirror’s frame was beautiful, glowing with a golden light with sculptures of trees, ocean waves that seemed to move, fairies and magical creatures like griffins, dragons, a geni, and even a pirate ship!

Willow scanned the mirror’s edges, absorbing the beautiful decorations, and turned her attention to the mirror itself. Willow expected to see a reflection of Katara and herself looking back, which she did. She did not expect to see what she saw behind her!

Directly behind Willow and Katara in the mirror was a beautiful forest, mysterious and dark, stretching back for miles and miles. Dark green sunlight filtered through the canopy of leaves, leaving deep brown shadows on the soft, moss covered floor of the forest. Far off, into the distance, she could see a glowing castle in the bright sunlight, contrasting with the deep greens and browns of the forest in front of her.

Willow heard a small voice, one that sounded so far away, call out, almost in a whisper.

“Willow...Willow...we need your help! Please...help us!”

Now Willow didn’t recognize the sound of the voice, but she knew deep in her heart who the voice belonged to: Petal Icewand! Willow looked down at Katara’s deep brown eyes, and Katara looked back, almost as if she had something to say. Willow looked at the mirror and at Katara’s reflection.

“Are we going to stand here all day?” asked Katara from the mirror. Willow’s dog could talk!

“You can talk?” exclaimed Willow.

“Only here, in the mirror,” said Katara, “and I think your fairy needs our help!”

“Well, then here we go!” said Willow, with a big grin.

Willow put her hand on Katara’s back and took a deep breath to calm her excitement. The two stepped forward and with a bright flash of light and a cold chill, they walked through the mirror.
